Security Guard Training

Rockland Community College, an NYS DCJS certified security guard training school, offers the following NYS mandated security training courses. All courses are taught by certified instructors.

Women’s Self-Defense

The courses offer realistic self-defense tactics and techniques, emphasizing awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. The courses are for women who want to learn self-defense techniques and also for women who have taken a self-defense program and want to enhance their knowledge and skills.

This is not a martial arts program. The courses are taught by certified R.A.D. instructors and provide participants with a workbook/reference manual. The manual outlines the R.A.D. Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth. The R.A.D. system of physical defense is currently being taught at many colleges and universities. The growing, widespread acceptance of this system is due primarily to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of its tactics, solid research, defensibly legal standing, and unique teaching methodology.

Instructors teach defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense/martial arts tactics. The system of realistic defense that is taught provides participants with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance. The course provides effective options by teaching participants to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well-being.

Attendance at all sessions is required. Participants must have completed all the basic classes to be eligible to attend the advanced class. Female-identified participants are welcome. The course is held about six times per year. The program is free for currently registered RCC students and staff, and $20 for the public. The basic class totals 12 hours over a minimum of four sessions, while the stand-alone advanced class is held in one, three-hour session.

Men’s Self-Defense

Course participants will be able to raise their awareness of aggressive behavior, recognize how it affects their lives, learn steps to avoid it, consider how they can be part of reducing aggression and violence, and practice hands-on self-defense skills to resist and escape such behavior directed toward them. The program is designed to empower participants to make safer choices when confronted with aggressive behavior.

The course is held periodically throughout the year and is open to the public.

R.A.D. for TEENS Program

R.A.D for TEENS builds on the material taught in the men’s and women’s self-defense basic courses. The program focuses on what teens are going through as they navigate their way into adulthood, and helps them recognize the signs of a harmful relationship.

All topics are discussed from teens’ point of view. Team-building exercises are used to help participants understand what they are feeling and the issues they may be facing, such as bullying, peer pressure, domestic violence and relationship abuse. Within the team-building exercises, teens also learn they aren’t alone in what they are going through, which gives them strength and support to move forward.

The program creates a “Safe Space” for teens to express their opinions without fear of criticism or mocking. It is designed for teens to come away with both basic defensive skills and the knowledge (through classroom instruction) that they do have the ability to overcome what they are facing.

R.A.D. for TEENS is geared toward high school students but can be adapted to younger age groups as well. The course is held periodically throughout the year.

Domestic Violence Workshop

The program recognizes the seriousness of domestic violence and brings to light why so many people trivialize and ignore it. Throughout the workshops it is explained what exactly domestic violence is, how to recognize the signs of domestic violence, and the steps one can take to end the cycle of violence. Strategies on what to do if a partner chooses to leave the relationship are also examined.

The workshop is geared toward RCC students. Other sessions are available to the public upon request by contacting the RCC Public Safety office at 845-574-4217. If other colleges are interested in having RCC host a workshop, they may also contact the RCC Public Safety office at the number above. There are three options for duration of workshops: half-hour, hour and two hours.
