Intended Audience: High school seniors/parents of high school seniors

Abstract: Courses in English Skills help students develop skills they must have to succeed in college. Courses in reading, writing, and combinations of both, have been designed to meet the individual needs of students. Students are placed in English Skills courses as a result of English assessments in reading comprehension and writing. Students placed in English skills courses have individual advisement and consultation by an advisor to determine a course of study. Students remain in the English Skills classes until end of semester reassessment shows they are prepared to move into all mainstream college courses. While in this program, students are able to take a select number of mainstream courses if this is deemed advisable.

About the Speaker: Sheila Goldstein, Professor, English as a Second Language, has been on the staff of Rockland Community College for over 25 years. During her tenure, she has held the positions of Chairperson of English as a Second Language and English Skills while still maintaining teaching time in the ESL Department. She received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996 and the Outstanding Teacher Award from The New York State Association of Two Year Colleges in 1998. Goldstein earned an AA in Liberal Arts from Rockland Community College; BA in Speech, English and Theater from Ramapo College, Mahwah, NJ; and an MS in Education - Concentration in English from SUNY New Paltz.
