Student Trustee Rafael Agustin Frias

portraitMr. Rafael Agustin Frias was elected by his fellow students to serve as the student representative on the Board of Trustees for the 2018-2019 term. A political science major, he is on track to graduate in May 2019 with an Associate of Science degree in Liberal Arts & Science.

As student trustee, Frias aims to improve accessibility, connectivity and security of RCC's technological resources and facilities. Aside from his academic and trustee responsibilities, he also holds leadership positions as president of the Historical and Political Science Society, and as secretary of the Organic Gardening Club and the newly formed Paranormal Society.

Born and raised in upper Manhattan, Frias attended Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) for most of his high school career and graduated from Ramapo High School after his family moved to Spring Valley. Frias's parents immigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala and Rafael is the first in his family to attend college. He chose RCC as a first step in his post-secondary education due to its proximity to his new home and its solid academic reputation. Enrolling at RCC in the fall of 2016, he overcame a difficult first year as he adjusted to the rigors of college academics, and carries a 3.4 GPA into his final year.

Frias hopes to transfer to Hunter College, CUNY, and pursue a career in New York City politics, serving his home community of Washington Heights. “I am the product of many people who helped me get to where I am,” said Frias, who credits Professor Konstadinos Ritsatos and Dr. Michael Baston, RCC's president, for their mentorship. “I wanted to give back to RCC for helping me so much.”
