Rockland Community College Cleaning and Disinfecting

As RCC students complete their academic requirements through online and alternative education, and many faculty and staff work remotely to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Rockland Community College continues to take precautions to ensure the health and well-being of its campus community in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Many of those helping to ensure that campus is safe, are Housekeeping staff members who are hard at work cleaning and disinfecting our campus on a daily basis.

Even while working reduced schedules on all of our campuses to reduce the density of employees on campus, to date the Housekeeping Department has logged over 5000 hours in cleaning and disinfecting our entire campus with CDC approved COVID-19 disinfectants.

Below is an overview of cleaning and disinfecting protocols followed by our Housekeeping team:

COVID 19 Housekeeping Duties Daily Routine:

  • Staff member assigned to Brucker Hall
  • Staff member assigned FH, CAC, PE Building
  • Staff member assigned to AC – II basement and AC – I 1st floor bathrooms
  • One to two staff member(s) assigned to the Technology Building.
  • Staff member assigned to monitor bathrooms in the Library and Student Union.

Daily Duties for Occupied Rooms/Spaces:

  • Disinfect high touch surfaces with Clorox, or CDC approved equivalent.
  • Wipe down all high touch surfaces including: office desks, file cabinet handles, phones, doorknobs, light switches, and keyboards.

Daily Duties for Open Areas/Common Spaces:

  • Disinfect high touch surfaces with Clorox, or CDC approved equivalent.
  • Disinfect stair rails, door hardware, countertops, dispensers.
  • Mop/vacuum floors.
  • Windex windows of Entrance doors.
  • Wipe down elevators twice daily with disinfectant, then polish the stainless steel with oil.

Daily Duties for Restrooms:

  • Disinfect bathrooms with Clorox twice daily
  • Wipe down sinks and faucets.
  • Wipe down paper towel, and toilet paper dispensers.
  • Wipe down soap dispensers
  • Wipe down partition panels and partition door latch
  • Wipe down toilet
  • Mop floor

Weekly Cleaning and Disinfecting of Classrooms and Unoccupied Offices/Spaces:

  • Disinfect classroom furniture (desks and chairs), with Clorox.
  • Wipe down light switches.
  • Wipe down window sills.
  • Windex all windows.
  • Wipe down door handles and glass.
  • Mop hard surface flooring.
  • Shampoo carpet
  • Disinfect all building with Victory Innovations electro static sprayers.
  • Seal and initial all rooms which have been thoroughly disinfected
  • As sealed rooms are used, they are thoroughly re-cleaned and disinfected.


We have an on-campus stock of plexiglass, power sprayers that disinfect up to 10,000 square feet per hour, and hand-held disinfecting sprayers. We have recently brought an experienced Infectious Disease Specialist onto our team.

We are well stocked with Personal Protective Equipment including: masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and 12 contactless digital thermometers. We are researching temperature kiosks and UV light technology.
