POL 211 Contemporary China

An overview of developments in China since the Revolution of 1949, with particular emphasis on the period since the death of Mao Zedong in 1976. The trauma of the Great Cultural Revolution and other political movements will provide a background to the recent emphasis on pragmatic approaches to economic production and the opening of China to the outside world. China’s cultural and religious institutions and how they have fared over the past 20 years are also examined. The conduct of China’s foreign relations with its neighbors in East Asia, with Communist bloc nations, and the West is included.
