PDA 140 History of Civil Liberties and Multiculturalism (cross-listed with PLG 140)
This course explores the historical development of the Federal Constitution, Bill of Rights and American Judiciary. The history of the development of the body of law to ensure and preserve the civil rights and liberties of protected classes is examined. These classes include those based on race, religion, gender, class, age, sexual preference and the disabled. Students will learn about these legal protections and the judicial history behind them, while also examining various issues of American pluralism and diversity. Through class discussion of key landmark Supreme Court decisions, students will apply analytical skills to interpret and understand the historical, cultural and societal impact on these precedents.
