ENG 231 African American Literature I
This lecture course is intended as the first half of the basic survey in African American literature (18th and 19th centuries). We will read works of non-fiction, poetry, drama and fiction in order to explore the development of the African American literary tradition. Writers include Equiano, Jacobs, Douglass, Wheatley, Brown, Harper and Dunbar. Course requirements include writing responses, class discussion, short papers and a research paper.
