ENG 208 American Values in Literature
Students will read and analyze works of literature that focus on the place of values such as self-reliance, diversity, and personal and political freedom in the lives of Americans from the closing of the frontier (1870) to the present. The course examines the era’s historical, geographic and social forces, which have shaped American identity and cultural consciousness.
