"RCC turned my dream of attending a top university into reality."

In October 5th, 2010, Mark attended the White House Summit on Community Colleges, an event that highlighted the social value and continued challenges of community colleges in bolstering national education goals. This event was chaired by Dr. Jill Biden, wife of our Vice President and a vocal advocate and long time community college educator. Melissa Gates of the Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation was also present at the event, among many  other political and educational notables.  President Obama addressed the group and reiterated his support for community colleges and their important heritage and role. Mark was nominated to attend the event by Rod Risley, the head of Phi Theta Kappa, which is the largest international honor society.

At Georgetown, Mark continues his activities and support on behalf of the Anti-Slavery Committee, an organization he led at RCC as co-founder/co-chair. Mark was selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University 2010 Conference in recognition of his involvement in the Anti-Slavery Committee.

Svensson was chosen from more than 1,500 nominees by Phi Theta Kappan International Honor Society, in collaboration with USA TODAY newspaper, for the elite 20-member USA TODAY'S 2010 ALL-USA Community College Academic Team. In addition, because Svensson was the top scorer among all New York students, he was named a New Century Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa.
