Concentration Requirements

Participants in the M/TS Honors Program have one of two options

OPTION A: PARTICIPATION IN THE M/TS HONORS PROGRAM
OPTION B: M/TS HONORS CONCENTRATION PARTICIPATION


 

OPTION A:

General Qualifications

  1. Admittance to the M/TS Honors Program as a full-time liberal arts student.
  2. Willingness to follow all M/TS Honors Program procedures, particularly a close relationship with a mentor.
  3. Enrollment in any honors courses that serve the best interests of the student

Grades

  1. A student must maintain a minimum of 3.2 cumulative index each semester to remain in the M/TS Honors Program.
  2. A student must have an over-all 3.5 cumulative index to obtain a designation on the transcript: "Participant in the MENTOR/TALENTED STUDENT HONORS PROGRAM



OPTION B:

General Qualifications (as of September 1989)

  1. Admittance to the M/TS Honors Program as a full-time liberal arts student
  2. Election of Honors Concentration Option NO LATER than the second semester of the freshman year

Honors Courses
Among the 63 credits for the A.A. or A.S. Honors Degree, Liberal Arts and Sciences, a student must enroll for a MINIMUM OF SEVEN HONORS COURSES, in all, one of which will the Philosophy Seminar "Processes of Thinking." Most honors students elect more honors offerings than the required minimum seven, often as many as ten.

Core Requirements

  1. Attendance at a TRANSFER PROCEDURE SEMINAR (no credit)
  2. Seminar in Philosophy, PHL 204, Processes of Thinking (included in the requirement for seven honors courses. PHL 201, "Introduction to Philosophy, is recommended to be taken before "Processes."
  3. One sophomore Honors course in literature is required, either English 220 or English 221, Honors Literature Seminar. If the student takes both ENG 220 and ENG 221, only one research essay is mandatory. If the student enrolls in only one of these seminars, then the research essay must be done. Science students may enroll in English 220 or English 221 or in any other sophomore literature opening.
  4. English 910: Theories and Practice of Researching, (a two-credit module)
  5. Three credits pf Physical Education in addition to the required 60 academic credits for graduation
  6. MAT 125, Statistics, is recommended for the non-math oriented honors students; however, math-oriented students should take pre-Calculus or Calculus
  7. One year of foreign language (two semesters) for all liberal arts students whose emphasis for the degree is not science
  8. One year BIO 105, 106, General Biology (two semesters) with labs, or any other lab science, i.e. physics or chemistry. Honors Biology is recommended for students who can do the more intensive study
  9. One semester Independent Study or International Study Abroad, (accredited program), to be done on a regular Learning Contract with an assigned mentor, related to a field of major interest
  10. Extra-Curricular Activities related to a field of major interest
  11. Students must maintain a 3.5 cumulative index at graduation with nothing below a 3.2 in any semester
