RCC is committed to providing a competitive athletic atmosphere in an institution known for academic excellence.  The main focus of the athletic administration and coaching staff is to assist student athletes in their pursuit of a four year college degree.  Upon graduation from Rockland, several student athletes have competed professionally in various sports, and many others have competed at NCAA or NAIA sponsored colleges or universities.

Supported largely by Student Activity Fees, the Rockland Hawks compete in the Mid Hudson Athletic Conference.  Rockland is also a member of Region XV of the National Junior College Athletic Association, with all teams participating in Division III, except for Baseball and Men's Golf, both in Division II.  Currently, the Hawks field teams in various sports.  Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, bowling, golf, soccer, and tennis.  Women’s sports consist of basketball, bowling, tennis, and volleyball.  Athletics are for the entire college community to enjoy, whether as a participant or as a fan.

Rockland also boasts a 90,000 square foot indoor fieldhouse which incorporates four tennis courts, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, squash courts, two aerobic and dance studios, an indoor running track, a swimming pool, a fitness center with free weights, and an athletic trainer’s lab.  Outdoor facilities include a 500 seat lighted baseball stadium, a soccer field with an outdoor running track, five tennis courts, and a softball field.

2008 - 2009 Highlights

The Baseball Team, under the direction of Fifth Year Head Coach Joe Zeccardi, ended the season with a disappointing 10 - 9 loss to rival Orange Community College in the Region XV Tournament.  Although the Hawks out hit the Colts 17 - 10, they left 11 runners on base.  They did, however, lead 9 - 4 in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to withstand a furious Orange rally.  The heartbreaking defeat followed an impressive 8 - 7 victory over Sullivan Community College in the opening round.  Against the Generals, Nick Tingos pitched 7 strong innings, and Dan Roeser knocked in Ryan Spicer with the eventual winning run in the top of the ninth.  Sophomore Shortstop Anthony Estevez was selected to the All Region XV Tournament team by being 8 for 13 and leading the tournament with a .615 batting average.  Also receiving post season honors was Pearl River native Ryan Spicer.  Leading Region XV in batting with a .518 batting average, Spicer became only the tenth RCC baseball player to receive NJCAA All American honors.  As the team’s Right Fielder, he had 59 hits, 12 doubles, 2 home runs, and 46 RBI.  The sophomore also earned Region XV and Mid Hudson Conference Player of the Year honors.  The Hawks were also represented on the All Region Second Team Squad by Outfielder Chris Landry, Third Baseman Chris Lupardo, Catcher / Designated Hitter Bill Ribeiro, and Tingos.  Tingos, a sophomore Pitcher from Staten Island, also made the All Mid Hudson Conference First Team.  The Hawks ultimately completed the season with a 13 - 19 overall record.

Although the Bowling Team fell short of their goal of defending their Region XV Team title, the Hawks did have representation at the NJCAA National Tournament in Buffalo, March 5 - 7.  Under the direction of Second Year Head Coach Rob Varano, players Amada Garcia and Jonna Morgo took home the Women’s Doubles Trophy, and were named to the All Region XV Team.  Garcia, a North Rockland product, bowled a 636 series, and  Morgo, a Clarkstown North graduate, netted a 606.  Morgo also finished third in the Singles Completion, bowling a 633 series.  In Doubles Action, they finished eighth and rolled a doubles total of 1010 (in a three game series).  Individually, Garcia finished twenty second (496) overall and Morgo finished fortieth (435).  In Men’s Individual Action, the team of Jonathan Coe and Michael Ventillo placed forty fifth at the National Tournament.  The keglers took second at the Region XV Tournament in doubles play, with a total score of 1359.  Coe, a North Rockland graduate, was named to the All Region XV Team.  He posted a 211 average in the All Events Category, and took fourth place in Singles Competition.  Ventillo, a Clarkstown South alum, finished in the Singles Division top 10.

The Men’s Basketball Team finished its best season in school history, under the guidance of Fourth Year Head Coach William Kurisko, with a 22 - 13 overall record.  The Hawks pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks in Region XV Basketball Tournament history on March 1.  Down by as much as 22 points with just under 10 minutes left, RCC stormed back to defeat Sullivan Community College 81 - 77 in the championship game.  The team defeated Suffolk Community College 94 - 82, in the February 28 semi finals.  They also sank Suffolk-Grant Community College 90 - 75, in the quarterfinals.  Angel Gonzalez was named Tournament MVP, and teammate Matt Rose was selected to the All Tournament team.  After defeating Sullivan in the Region XV Tournament, the Hawks traveled to SUNY Delhi for the NJCAA National Tournament March 12 - 14.  The Hawks took eighth place in the tournament and fell to rival Bergen Community College (NJ) in the opening round, 78 - 64.  Allegheny Community College (PA) and the College of DuPage (IL) also dealt the Hawks a pair of losses during the tournament.  Spring Valley graduate Matt Rose was selected to the All Tournament team.  In all, there were several post season awards distributed.  Gonzalez, a Don Bosco graduate, was named to the All Mid Hudson Conference First team and the All Region XV Second Team.  Suffern's Kevin Major and Saint Joseph's Marc Mandara earned Second Team honors on the All Conference team, and Honorable Mention status on the All Region XV Team.  Ramapo graduate Travis Jordan also earned Honorable Mention rank on the All Region XV team.

The Men's Golf Team, under the direction of First Year Head Coach Tom Craffey, experienced a successful campaign for the second straight season, with Craffey guiding the team to a first place finish in the final Mid Hudson Conference Standings.  Newcomer Amrit Etwaroo was named NJCAA All American, the first RCC golfer in over 10 years to earn such an honor.  Etwaroo fired a 75 on the final day of the Region XV Championship at Grossingers Country Club in Liberty, to capture the Region XV Title.  He, along with teammate Jon Cross, represented the Hawks at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament June 1 - 6 at the Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua.  Etwaroo shot a 292 over 4 rounds and finished eighth in the overall individual standings.  After shooting par (72) in the first round, Cross managed a total of 309, which was good enough for a tie for thirty fifth place.  The Tappan Zee graduate finished in the top 10 at the Region XV Tournament, and earned All Region XV Team status.

The Men’s Soccer Team made their fifth consecutive Region XV Championship Tournament appearance this season.  Twenty Sixth Year Head Coach Loren Green led the Hawks to a 10 - 7 - 2 overall record.  The team fell to nationally ranked Dutchess Community College (3 - 1) in the first round of the Region XV Tournament on October 19, although during the course of the season, the Hawks posted wins against nationally ranked Monroe College, and County College of Morris in New Jersey.  Of the eighteen players on the roster, fifteen were in their first year.  Freshman Rohan McDonald scored a team high twenty three goals for the season, and was named to the All Region XV First Team and All Mid Hudson Conference First Team.  Teammate Andre Brown was also named to the All Region XV First Team and All Mid Hudson Conference First Team.  Slobodan Todoric and Ivor Cumberbatch joined McDonald and Brown on the All Mid Hudson Conference First Team, while Diego Ramocan was named to the All Mid Hudson Conference Second Team, and Michael Barbetto was named to the All Region XV Sportsmanship Team.

The Men's Tennis Team, under the direction of Twenty Third Year Head Coach Rich Meyer, captured their first Mid Hudson Conference Championship since 2005.  The Hawks posted 5 - 4 decisions against both Dutchess Community College and Ulster Community College, to secure the title.  The team competed in the 2009 Region XV Tournament at the historic Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, and finished the season with a 3 - 2 overall record.  Sophomore Ayman Busat earned Mid Hudson Conference Player of the Year honors, while teammates Ali Asef and Jian Yin He were selected to the All Conference First Team.

The Volleyball Team returned to the Region XV Tournament for the first time since the 2005 - 2006 season.  The team finished with a 13 - 11 overall record and a 13 - 9 Region XV record.  The team traveled to Garden City on October 29 for a Quarterfinal Match against rival Nassau Community College.  Although the Hawks lost 3 - 0, the year finished on a positive note with several players earning post season accolades.  With eight first year players on the thirteen person roster, things look good for a strong future.  Sophomore Sania Joseph earned All Mid Hudson Conference First Team Honors.  Teammates Kayla Lynch and Paulina Boye were named to the All Mid Hudson Conference Second Team, with Boye also receiving Region XV Honorable Mention Status.  As well, Mariya Dumchenkova was named to the All Region XV Sportsmanship Team.  During the season, Joseph and Lynch were each named Mid Hudson Conference Player of the Week, with Joseph earning the honor for the week of October 20, and Lynch earning the honor for the week of September 29.

The Women’s Basketball Team, under the direction of First Year Head Coach Ty Della Monica, finished third in the Mid Hudson Conference Tournament at Westchester Community College.  Rockland defeated Dutchess Community College 65 - 42, in the consolation game on February 21.  Prior to that game, the third seeded Lady Hawks fell to second seeded Orange Community College 61 - 46, in the semi finals.  At the Tournament, Freshman Alyssa Guido was named Mid Hudson Conference MVP, with Sophomores Liridona Gjonbalaj and Nakiah Zamor named to the All Conference Second Team. Guido was also named to the All Tournament and All Region XV Teams. Overall, Coach Della Monica guided the Lady Hawks to a 6 - 15 record, and a berth in the Region XV Tournament.

The Women’s Tennis Team finished the season at the Region XV Tournament on October 24 at Orange County Community College in Middletown.  Although they struggled through a rebuilding season, the Hawks had more players participate than in recent years.  Under the guidance of Fifth Year Head Coach Kevin Rapelye, Rockland will look to bounce back from a 0 - 5 season when they take the court next year.  With nine players dotting the roster, five of which are freshmen, the future looks bright.
