Rockland
Community College (RCC) is committed to
providing a
competitive athletic atmosphere in an institution known for academic
excellence. The main focus of the athletic administration and
coaching
staff is to assist student athletes in their pursuit of a four year
college degree. Upon graduation from Rockland, several
student
athletes
have competed professionally in various sports, and many others have
competed at NCAA or NAIA sponsored colleges or universities. Supported largely by Student Activity Fees, the Rockland Hawks compete in the Mid Hudson Athletic Conference. Rockland is also a member of Region XV of the National Junior College Athletic Association, with all teams participating in Division III, except for Baseball and Golf, both in Division II. Currently, the Hawks field teams in various sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, bowling, golf, soccer, and tennis. Women’s sports consist of bowling, tennis, and volleyball. Athletics are for the entire college community to enjoy, whether as a participant or as a fan. Rockland also boasts a 90,000 square foot indoor fieldhouse which incorporates four tennis courts, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, squash courts, two aerobic and dance studios, an indoor running track, a swimming pool, a fitness center with free weights, and an athletic trainer’s lab. Outdoor facilities include a 500 seat lighted baseball stadium, a soccer field with an outdoor running track, five tennis courts, and a softball field. Velasquez was also named Mid Hudson Conference Most Valuable Player. As well, Balaj and JohnPierre Ricketts were named to the First Team. The Volleyball Team and First Year Head Coach Stacy Smith just missed the playoffs by one game, finishing ninth in the eighteen team region. Christine Booth and Nakiah Zamor were named to the Second Team, while Mary Grace Vergara was named to the Region XV Sportsmanship Team. The Women’s Tennis Team improved again under the guidance of fourth-year Head Coach Kevin Rapelye. The Region XV Tennis Tournament was held October 26 - 27 at the United States Military Academy. In the singles competition, Jacqui Lamer and Haena Yoon made the semi-finals before losing, and Juri Iwata lost in the First Flight Singles Championship. In the doubles competition, all three Rockland pairs made it to the semi-final round before being eliminated. Lamer/Iwata played first doubles, Dasmon Lee/Victoria Samakai played second doubles, and Yoon/Lexi Nathan completed third doubles.
