PLACEMENT TEST INFORMATION AND SCHEDULE

The Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs) were developed by the College Board to provide information about your level of skill in reading, writing, and mathematics required for success in college. By assessing your ability in these areas, the CPTs help to determine the English and Math courses most appropriate for you at this time. If test results do not meet the standards of college-level courses, students are required to register in courses which help them to improve their skills and increase their opportunity to succeed in college work.

Placement results are valid five years from the date of the examination.  If a student is planning to register for a course that has a placement score requirement, and his/her placement scores are more than five years old, the placement test(s) will need to be taken again.

The Accuplacer™ Placement Test - The test consists of the following:

Essay– Prepare a 4 to 5 paragraph writing sampleof about 300-600 words on a given topic within 50 minutes.
Reading Comprehension - 20 questions related to reading skills, such as identifying the main idea and making inferences.
Sentence Skills - 20 questions related to sentence structure and grammar.
Mathematics - 17 questions related to Arithmetic and 12 questions related to Elementary Algebra. Please note: Calculators are not allowed!

Testing Rules and Regulations

Notebooks, textbooks, cell phones, calculators, and dictionaries are not permitted. Any student who gives or receives help during the test or uses a cell phone, calculator, notes or books will not be allowed to continue the test.

Test taking tips

·         Read all on-screen instructions/directions carefully.

·         You will not be allowed to skip a question or go back to a previous one. When you are having difficulty answering a question, try to eliminate one or more of the choices. Then pick one of the remaining choices.

·         Take time to do your best. Placement tests can be taken only once; take them seriously. Initial placement is Important.

·         Initial placement into the English and/or Math sequence determines how many courses you will need, and the number of semesters needed to complete the required English and/or Math course for your degree path.

Special Testing Accommodations:
  • Students with disabilities who are requesting accommodations are required to provide the Office of Disability Services with the Assessment Exam Accommodation Request form and appropriate disability documentation at least three weeks before the Placement Test. If you have any questions regarding this procedure please contact (845)574-4541.
  • If a student takes the placement exam and chooses not to self- identify, he/she may not retake the test a second time.

Exemptions from Testing:

Students who have taken English composition and/or Mathematics courses from a regionally accredited college within the United States, and earned a grade of C or better in these courses, are exempt from Placement Testing for that course. In order to be eligible for this exemption, please contact your previous college(s) and request that they mail an official copy of your transcript to Rockland Community College's Records/Registration Office.

Please note: This exemption is based on a review of your previous college records and depends on the specific degree program that you are pursuing. Nursing and Occupational Therapy applicants have specific placement exam requirements; students must contact the program they are interested in pursuing for more information.
