Password Guidelines
Password Guidelines
Your passwords are the keys to access our computer system. If an unauthorized person logs in with your user name and password not only do they access to your data and files, but also have access to other resources and facilities in the system. This unauthorized person also has the capability to send email to others in your name and to do harm to our computer system as you. Therefore, it is very important to keep your account from being access by others.
These guidelines apply to all students and employees of Rockland Community College who have an account or any form of access that requires a password that resides at any College facility, or has access to RCC's network.
Generally:
- Passwords should be change every 90 days.
- Old passwords should not be re-use
- Passwords should conform to the guidelines below.
Password Construction Guidelines:
Choosing a hard-to-guess password and changing it regularly will help prevent unauthorized person from accessing your account. Your password should:
- Must be at least 8 characters long.
- Must contain uppercase letters (e.g. R) AND lowercase letters (e.g. c)
- Must contain at least 2 numerical characters
- Must NOT be based on well-known or easily accessible personal information such as logon I.D., name, birthday, address, social security or any permutations thereof.
- Must NOT be words that can be found in a standard dictionary (English or foreign) or are publicly know slang or jargon.
Be creative! Try to choose a password that has meaning for you and you alone.

- If possible, do not use the same passwords to access various RCC systems.
- If you know that your password has been compromised, contact the IT Department immediately and change your password immediately.
- Anyone who needs access to a computer system should submit a request for his or her own logon ID and password.
