Basic PC Troubleshooting
Keyboard Problems
Keyboard error at boot or you are unable to type
An error with the keyboard can be caused by any of the below possibilities.
- Keyboard is not connected properly.
- Stuck key
- Bad keyboard
- Bad PS/2
Note: You cannot connect a PS/2 keyboard when Windows is already loaded. You need to shut down the computer, connect the keyboard and restart.
Solutions:
- Verify that keyboard is connected properly to the computer by disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard to the computer.
- Ensure that there are no stuck keys on the keyboard. If all keys appear to be ok and you have a standard desktop computer with keyboard, attempt to turn keyboard over and gently hit the back of the keyboard to loosen any dirt or hair that may be stuck in the keyboard.
- Try another keyboard on the computer to verify that the keyboard has not gone bad.
- If all of the above solutions are not able to resolve your issue call your technician to look into the problem
Note: One of the dirtiest parts of your computer is the keyboard. Regular cleaning will help keep the keyboard working properly. First, blow compressed air through the spaces in between the keys to remove dust and lint. If you shake your keyboard upside-down this will also remove some of the particles.
