Logging in to Datatel
There are two options for logging into Colleague:
- Double-click on the desktop icon,
OR - Click on the Start button, go up to Programs, and over to the Datatel option, and click Datatel.
The Login dialog box will display:

1. Enter your User ID. In most cases your User ID should be your first initial plus the first seven letters of your last name all in lowercase.
2. Enter your Datatel password. For security reasons this should not be the same as your network or e-mail passwords. Any difficulties in logging in should be referred to the help desk ext. 4283.
3. Some users may have a drop down box for multiple databases depending on their security level.

4.Click OK
A note on passwords: A password is used to protect a system and the information it contains. The use of a password insures only authorized users can gain access to the system in much the same way the PIN on your ATM and credit cards prevent unauthorized access to your accounts. A password should never be displayed or given out to another person. If someone needs access to Datatel they should contact the help desk at ext. 4283.
Step 2: Script Refreshing
First time users, and after some periodic database updates, users will receive an “Alert” message box displaying:

Click OK. Your scripts will automatically update displaying the following:

Let this process run…
Next, an “Updating UI Software” box will appear, showing refreshing of objects.
Let this process run…it make take a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer. Please do not cancel or exit out of this process once it has started.

The procedure of updating scripts will only be done the first time you log in, and may happen after the System Office has updated the Colleague User Interface database. This “update script message” will appear on each database (live, development, etc) that you log in on for the first time, or each time a Colleague update is done by the System Office.
After this process is complete, the following “Alert” message box will display:

Click OK. Then restart Colleague/Datatel and repeat the log in steps above.
A dialog box appears displaying information that the User Interface is loading the application files.

UI will pause to let you know which database you are logging into. Hit the enter key to continue.

The application will “ping pong” up and down and when the files are loaded, the application workspace appears as shown below. This may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer. Please be patient…

After you have completed the logging in process, the following screen will appear. You are now in Colleague User Interface. The example below shows an actual screen and labels each part of the screen.
