English and Math Assessment Accommodations
The Office of Assessment and Placement administers the English and Mathematics Assessment, however, disability accommodations for these assessments must be arranged through the Office of Disability Services prior to taking them. A disability is defined by the American with Disabilities Act as a physical or mental impairment which "substantially" limits a "major" life activity, has a record of having such impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment.
- Prior to receiving academic accommodations and services, students are required to provide the Office of Disability Services (ODS) with recent written documentation (i.e., within the last 3 years) of their disability from a licensed or otherwise properly credentialed professional who has undergone appropriate and comprehensive training. Documentation must be written on official stationary or letterhead; documentation written on a prescription pad is not acceptable. While high schools Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are reviewed, they are not sufficient.
- Subsequent to submitting appropriate documentation, students must formally request accommodations via completing and returning an Assessment Exam Accommodation Request form (AEAR) to the ODS. The forms are available in the Office of Disability Services.
- Students are encouraged to submit the form at least 10 days prior to taking the assessment exam and strongly encouraged to meet with the Office of Disability Services staff to discuss the appropriate academic adjustments and auxiliary learning aides.
- Once the AEAR has been reviewed, the ODS will notify the student and the Office of Assessment and Placement in writing of its decision.
- Please Note: Approved Approved accommodations are based upon formal documentation of a disability. The ODS reserves the right to request additional documentation if the documentation provided is deemed inadequate.
