Biography

Debra Tietze is Professor of Psychology and former Chair of Teacher Education at RCC. She is completing a 30-year career at the College in 2017. She has been an educator for more than 40 years, starting out in a small farming community in Illinois and having taught various age levels from kindergarten through sixth grade, including at West Point Elementary School.

Tietze took a five-year child-rearing leave after her twin sons were born in 1982. During that time she enrolled at RCC to take courses in Art for NYS certification as an Art teacher. While studying Art she was recruited by the Psychology department to teach classes in Early Childhood Development.

One of her career highlights was leading the effort to procure a million-dollar grant to construct the Theresa Morahan Simmons Center for Children and Families, which houses the current Campus Fun & Learn Child Development Center. In addition, Tietze and colleague Louise Schreier coordinated a substantial FIPSE grant procurement from the U.S. Department of Education for “Preparing Adults for Careers in Teaching” (PACT).
