Phone Friends
In conjunction with the East Ramapo School District, trained volunteers are matched with an 'at risk' child in need of an additional adult relationship. Volunteers telephone each school day, allowing the child the opportunity to speak about problems, concerns or general events. Initially focused on 'latchkey' children who were alone after school, the program now includes other children, who have been identified to benefit from the reassuring phone calls. Some relationships extend beyond phone calls to in person visits and activities.
Since the telephone is the primary communication tool, this program provides the opportunity for volunteers who are disabled or homebound to still be able to develop a relationship with and nurture a child.
An annual luncheon is held to bring together the children and their 'Phone Friends' to meet and celebrate their relationships.
