Environmental Projects
RSVP participates in projects which promote public health, public safety and the care of our environment. Volunteers work examining our water supply for contaminants and helping to keep our rivers and streams clean. Projects include:
- Ground Water Protection: Project sponsored by the Rockland County Health Department, in cooperation with United Water of New York. Our goal was to identify possible sources of contamination to the wellheads in Rockland County, where 95% of the drinking water is provided by underground sources of water. In addition to providing information from the results of their survey, our volunteers were also increasing public awareness on how to keep water supplies safe.
- West Nile Virus: Under the supervision of the Health Department, volunteers participated in a program to identify and stop the spread of West Nile Virus through public awareness, setting mosquito traps, spreading larvicide, collecting dead birds and other tasks.
- Litter Education: Collaborating with 'Keep Rockland Beautiful,' the Clowns R Us Troupe is developing a Community Education program to alert children and adults about the impact of litter on our environment.
