In the 1970s, Rockland County was home to an incredibly vibrant and creative group of musicians, with Joe Preti playing keyboards in several local bands. Many went on to recording and touring careers, some playing with legendary jazz and rock greats around the world. Some stayed, some returned when they thought it was time to settle down, and others came back to the County regularly to reconnect with their roots and their families.

Joe and Pauline Preti were married at St. Ann’s in Nyack in 1975. Joe is from Nyack, one of 9 brothers and sisters, and Pauline is also from the County, graduating from Ramapo HS. They settled out West and raised their three children, but visited back here often, always staying in touch with family and friends. In October of 2010, their lives changed dramatically when Joe was badly injured and paralyzed from the chest down as a result of falling over a railing from the second to the first floor in their home.

Joe and Pauline share a strong spiritual faith and remain hopeful that with continued therapeutic treatment through Project Walk (a not-for-profit spinal cord injury recovery center), Joe will one day be able to get up out of the wheelchair. The treatments are costly, and not covered by insurance. Next week, Rockland County musicians from coast to coast are gathering to play a benefit concert for one of their own… ‘cause rock and roll never forgets.

This concert is the brainchild of two of Joe’s brothers, John Gleason of Piermont and Mark Preti of Blauvelt. They enlisted one of Joe’s earliest collaborators and friends – the accomplished musician, guitarist David Snider, for help in reaching out and gathering together some of the musicians who shared those early days – and many have continued with successful professional careers.

David, like Joe, grew up here, with several siblings still living in the area. Though he now makes his home in Colorado, he has maintained a strong relationship with the County, and the friends and fellow musicians who cut their teeth (i.e. first album) here. He has worked tirelessly to bring everyone together; from those first phone calls to the logistics of equipment shipments and set changes.

Do yourself a favor, buy some tickets and get to this extraordinary event. Think of it as a holiday gift to yourself - or for other loved ones. Come and share the love, hear some awesome music, and be grateful for your good health and the love of family and friends.

At Project Walk the goal is to reorganize/reprogram the spinal cord and brain to allow for the return of function. They are a not-for-profit facility and not covered by insurance; their cost is currently $105 (2013 pricing to be $110), an hour.
