Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in New York’s Marcellus Shale has been up for debate for some time. What exactly is fracking, and why is New York a candidate for this process? How might fracking affect our water quality as well as other components of our ecosystems? This lecture will explore the basics of hydraulic fracturing and the potential environmental issues surrounding this mode of natural gas extraction based on lessons learned from Pennsylvania and the Midwest.
Presenter: Elyse Fuller is an Associate Professor of Science at Rockland Community College where she teaches a variety of biology and environmental science courses and is advisor to students in the A.S. Environmental Science Program. She earned her M.S. in Biology from SUNY Albany where she studied in the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior Program. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, birding, and kayaking.
