Book Discussion: Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy

2 – 3 pm
Technology Center, Room 8349

African American History Month Event

Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy by Heather Ann Thompson

Presenter: Professor David Lucander

Over four days in 1971 more than 1,000 prisoners took control of the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment and negotiate for improved conditions. The State killed thirty-nine men and severely wounded more than one hundred others while retaking the prison by force. New York State authorities prosecuted the prisoners, but did not bring charges against the officials involved in the retaking and its aftermath. It's been 49 years since the notorious Attica uprising. This book shows that the coverup is worse than the crime.

Sponsored by the School of Education & Social Sciences and the Sam Draper Honors Program
