Alumni Success Story

Sean Rutigliano ’05

Sean RutiglianoSean Rutigliano ’05 has followed a far-ranging path on his ascent toward the top tier of college basketball coaching. He is Assistant Coach at Lipscomb University, an NCAA Division I institution based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Prior to Lipscomb, Rutigliano’s journey through Division I college basketball led him to assistant’s positions at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR, and a four-year tenure at Army before he landed at Lipscomb. At West Point, he helped lead the Black Knights to three consecutive 15-win seasons in 2012-2014, a feat the team last accomplished in 1967-70.

Rutigliano’s primary goal as a coach, though, has nothing to do with wins and losses: “I want to affect as many lives in a positive way as possible,” he says. That altruistic spirit was fostered at RCC under Head Coach Rob Kurzinsky, whom Rutigliano followed to Kean University for a volunteer assistant’s position, thus launching his coaching career.

Rutigliano received an AA in Liberal Arts: Mathematics and Science from RCC and earned a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. He was an NJCAA Academic All-American in basketball and tennis, two sports he still plays recreationally. He holds a BS from SUNY Cortland and an MA from Ball State University, both in Physical Education.
