Chana Gable Selmon ‘90, MD

Chana Gable SelmonIt was not easy for Chana Gable Selmon ‘90, MD, to become a doctor—she was forbidden to go to college. The oldest of 10 children in an Orthodox Jewish family, her parents were concerned that college would cause their children to abandon their religious values. Although she was reluctant to defy her parents and didn’t have their financial support, Selmon was determined to enroll.

“RCC professors from the Mentored/Talented Honors Program took an interest in me personally and academically. They became my family.”

Selmon transferred to Harvard on a full scholarship and earned her medical degree from Cornell University Medical Center in NYC. “My parents were proud and saw I hadn’t abandoned my religion.” She now works as an Emergency Medicine physician at Englewood Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center.

“I feel a huge loyalty to RCC. The quality of teaching I received there was amongst the highest I’ve ever received in any institution I’ve attended. “

Five of her siblings have since enrolled at RCC.
