Rich CocchiaraCocchiara ’82 Climbs Corporate Ladder as Technology Chief

Rich Cocchiara wasted no time plunging into the world of business right out of RCC. He joined IBM soon after receiving his AAS in Data Processing in 1982 and rose to Chief Technology Officer of IBM’s Resiliency Services group. He later joined other retired IBM executives in founding the startup Smarter Risk Corp., for which he is Chief Information & Technology Officer. He helps business customers understand and reduce their risks by using such tools as analytics, cyber security and intelligent sensors.

“RCC was very instrumental in my career,” says Cocchiara, who was raised in Suffern. “It was there that I switched from pursuing a degree in liberal arts to one of computer science. RCC instilled in me a love for technology and programming.”

Cocchiara’s wife, Judy; daughter, Stephanie; and brothers Joseph and Anthony all graduated from the College.

Cocchiara received a master’s in Computer Science from Marist College and a bachelor’s in Business Administration from Pace University. He has been an elected Councilman for the Town of Hamptonburgh in Orange County since 2001.
