Capuano Makes Most of Second Chance at RCC

You might say Joe Capuano Jr.’s second “tour of duty” at RCC was highly profitable. After dropping out, enlisting in the Navy and serving in Vietnam, Capuano re-enrolled, became salutatorian of the Class of 1972, and went on to achieve professional success in both retail and finance.

Four years after he left school, Capuano wrote to RCC, requesting readmission for the Spring of 1971. Ending his tour of duty and having just married, Capuano was seeking a second chance.

Encouraged by then Dean of Students Walter Reiner, Capuano earned an AA in History and Political Science. Elected president of the RCC Veterans Association, he and vice president Harry June teamed with a local organization to raise funds for fellow vets.

Capuano earned a scholarship to NYU where he earned a BS in Business Management and Public Administration. He embarked on a nearly three-decade career with Sears in executive management, serving as operations manager, store manager and district business manager. While working for Sears in Hicksville, NY, he earned an MBA from Hofstra University.

After retiring from Sears in 2001, Capuano launched a second career in financial services as a registered representative, and became a certified financial planner in 2007. He currently advises longtime clients on their investments, operating out of his base in San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife of 46 years, Suzanne.

“I am most appreciative and thankful for the assistance and support provided by the late Dean Walter Reiner and the faculty of RCC,” he said. “They opened the door for all of these many opportunities that I have been blessed to receive.”
