English Placement Test Contents

Writeplacer (Essay) - 50 minutes

Measures your ability to write effectively. Scoring is based on how effectively you communicate the message to the readers for the stated purpose. Your score is based on your ability to express, organize and support your opinions and ideas, not the position you take on the essay topic. Five characteristics of writing will be considered:

  • Focus
  • Organization
  • Development and Support
  • Sentence Structure
  • Mechanical Conventions

 

Reading Comprehension - 20 questions

  • Short and long reading passages with questions based on the text. Main idea, explicit statements related to a secondary idea, application, and inference
  • Two sentences followed by a question about their relationship. Does the second sentence support, contradict or repeat the information in the first sentence?

 

Sentence Skills – 20 questions

  • Choose the most appropriate word or phrase.
  • Re-write a sentence and maintain the original meaning.

 

Math Placement Test Contents

Elementary Algebra – 12 questions

  • Integers and rational numbers including negatives, the use of absolute values, and ordering.
  • Algebraic expressions and simple formulas. Add, subtract, multiply and divide monomials and polynomials. Evaluate positive rational roots and exponents. Simplify algebraic fractions. Factoring.
  • Equations, inequalities and word problems. Verbal problems presented in algebraic context, geometric reasoning, and translate written phrases into algebraic expressions and graphing.

 

Arithmetic – 17 questions

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with whole numbers and fractions. Recognizing equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and estimating.
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with decimals. Recognition of decimals, fraction and percent equivalencies, and estimating.
  • Problem solving using rates, percentages, measurements, simple geometry, and distribution of a quantity into its fractional parts.
