As part of the Division of Humanities, Social and Behavioral Science at Rockland, courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) provide intensive language training in developing the four skills of American English (listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as all language's various elements for students whose native language is not English. ESL also has course components to help students adapt to a new culture.
Students are placed into ESL courses as a result of the college-wide assessments. Students placed into ESL courses have individual conferences with an adviser to determine a course of study. Students remain in ESL classes until reassessment shows they are prepared to move into mainstream college courses. For more information about grading and other policies for ESL, consult the College Policies section of this catalog. Tutoring services are also an essential part of the ESL discipline.
