Welcome Address: Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor of the State University of New York
On June 1, 2009 Dr. Zimpher became the 12th Chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY). A dynamic, nationally recognized educational leader, Chancellor Zimpher is the first woman to be named chancellor in SUNY’s 60-year history.
From October 2003 through May 2009 Dr. Zimpher was the president of the University of Cincinnati, an urban research university with 16 colleges, an academic medical and research center and annual $1 billion budget. Under her leadership, UC’s retention and graduation rates, student satisfaction ratings and national rankings all improved. From 1998 to 2003 Dr. Zimher served as chancellor and a member of the School of Education faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Dr. Zimpher is the Chair of the Urban Serving Universities Board; past chair of the National Association of State University and Land-Grant Colleges Board of Directors; and a member of the National Board for the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.
In addition, Dr. Zimpher has authored or co-authored numerous books, monographs and academic journal articles on teacher education, urban education, academic leadership, and school/university partnerships.
Dr. Zimpher holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education and Speech, a master’s degree in English Literature, and a Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Higher Education Administration, all from The Ohio State University.
