Winning Teams at the Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competition
at SUNY Rockland Community College Take Home $1,000
Suffern, NY - Teams of SUNY Rockland Community College students and Nyack, Suffern and North Rockland High School students competed on December 7 for $1,000 in a first of its kind business plan competition. Each team had three to four members.
North Rockland High School students proposed "Tekwear"
Student presenters: John Veltri, Kevin Lauturner, and Sarah Hussain.
Faculty Advisors: Tim Ahle and Debra Jacoby.
Tekwear was proposed to be a clothing line manufacturer geared toward consumers that use cutting edge technological devices. Their clothing would include special compatibility with MP3 players, cell phones, speaker phone ear muffs, solar handbags, air conditioned shirts, and other technological devices.
RCC Students proposed "Tonique"
Student Presenters: Richard Rose of Highland Falls, Mark Raymond of Cornwall on the Hudson, and Michael Rumler of Highland Mills.
RCC Faculty Advisor: Mr. James Scharfenberger.
Tonique was proposed to be a French fusion restaurant where flavors of various ethnic culinary tastes are combined to make a cultural dining experience. It was intended be located in Nyack and offer an extensive beer and liquor menu with a takeout option.
The Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competition was designed to give students the opportunity to experience planning an entrepreneurship in both written and oral presentation formats. The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Rockland County Chapter, and the Rockland Community College Business Department co-hosted the competition.
Each winning team received the grand prize of $1,000, which was funded by the New York Society of Certified Public Accountants, Rockland Chapter. Mr. Mitchell Gusler, CPA, presented the prizes.
Judges comprised of representative from the IRS, Key Bank, CPA’s, and RCC faculty. They based their decisions upon a prescribed set of criteria as outlined in the New York State Small Business Development Center, "A Practical Guide to Preparing Your Business Plan." The event ended with the special guest speaker, Dufresne Nicholas, Vice President of Morgan Stanley, who was presented with a Leadership Award by Dr. Cliff L. Wood, President of Rockland Community College.
