SUNY Rockland Marine Biology Students Perform Oyster Reef Maintenance
and Water Quality Testing at Bronx River
Suffern, NY - Rockland Community College (RCC) marine biology students will perform oyster reef maintenance and water quality testing at the Bronx River with City University of New York Graduate Center students and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation workers.
Weather permitting, on Wednesday, October 14, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m., RCC marine biology students will be working in Soundview Park at the Bronx River as part of the required field component of the BIO 220 course.
Dr. Kristopher Baker, Instructor of Science, RCC, said, "I believe these field studies make the important link between theory and practice, which is vital to the understanding of not just marine biology, but science as a discipline. The field component is geared to give the students insight into how the principles we are discussing in class apply to real world applications."
This Fall, Rockland Community College began offering a degree in Environmental Science, making it the first college in Rockland County to do so. The Environmental Science curriculum includes courses in ecology, environmental pollution, environmental science, and marine biology.
Graduates can transfer to four-year colleges to earn degrees in related fields leading to careers in environmental research, policy, conservation or environmental education.
