Students learn how to create change in worldwide social justice movement

 

Ramapo, NY - The Rockland Community Foundation is providing eight scholarships for students, middle school age through college sophomores, to attend the first annual Hudson Youth Leadership Academy (HYLA) at Rockland Community College. One scholarship will be given to a student from each of the eight districts in Rockland County. A few scholarships are still available.

 

Monday-Wednesday, June 28-30

Hudson Youth Leadership Academy

Cost: Sliding scale--$100 to $200.  Scholarships are still available the Rockland Community Foundation.

Location: Rockland Community College, Technology Center, Suffern, N.Y.

Middle school students through college sophomores are invited to a three-day social justice-themed day academy. Students will gain the leadership skills and confidence necessary to create change and the opportunity to become part of a worldwide social movement.

 

Schedule:

Monday, June 28, 4:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Kick-off BBQ, 6 - 8 p.m., free for student participants and open to the public (teachers, parents, siblings, and friends) at $30. All welcome to stay for the opening presentations.

Tuesday, June 29, 9:00 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Wednesday, June 30, 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

 

THE ACADEMY INCLUDES:

  • Interactive learning through seminars and workshops on leadership
  • Development and social justice issues
  • Guidance from internationally trained Me to We leadership facilitators
  • Presentations from local non-profits
  • Talent show showcasing youth participants (family and friends invited)
  • Friendships with like-minded young people

 

The academy, sponsored by the Kurz Family Foundation and RCC, is coordinated by Me to We Leadership, a social enterprise that challenges traditional methods of doing business; Creative Response to Conflict, an organization that teaches skills to find nonviolent, creative solutions to conflict and bullying; and Free the Children, a charity that has built more than 500 schools bringing education to more than 50,000 children every day.
