Recently Published and Awarded Students, Staff and Faculty at SUNY Rockland Community College
Suffern, NY - SUNY Rockland Community College students, instructors, and faculty have recently been published, awarded as an inventor, pianist and writer, or were appointed to tenure-track Instructor positions.
Student Awards:
International Performing Arts student, Kaoru Miyauchi, was selected as a First Prize Winner in the 2007 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition. She is scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall (New York City, October 14).
Robin Hayman, Early Admit student, received the Eleanor Burlingham Award for environmental conservation. The $1,000 award is given annually to a high school senior who has demonstrated significant interest in the environment. Hayman, a member of RCC’s Organic Gardening Club and an Earth Day participant, converted his diesel burning 1987 Mercedes Benz 240 sedan into a vegetable oil powered machine.
Impulse, the student literary magazine, placed second in the Eastern Region of the Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) Literary Annual Magazine competition for 2007. This is the seventh year Impulse has placed. The 2007 issue was jointly edited by students John Amer, President, and Sreenath Vemuri, Vice President. David Pirell, adjunct faculty, Art, and his staff, students Earl Ricci and Laurie Homicki, ran production and design. Reamy Jansen, English Professor, is Impulse advisor.
Student and Faculty Publications:
Pearson Custom Publishing published a supplementary booklet, "Successful Immigrants in Business," edited by Martin Lecker, Ed.D., Professor, Business, and written by eight of his students from Pluralism and Diversity (PDA 101 and PDA 110) classes last spring. It will be used in the PDA 110 (PDA in Business and Industry) course this fall. The students are: Daiga Simanska, Theresa C. Rangel, Rhia Tolentino, Andrew Canariato, Stephanie Santiago, Gisele Da Silva Junqueira, Elizabeth Cardelli, and Peggy A. Manitaras. The publication is incorporated into the College PDA curriculum and packaged with Lecker’s text, "Multicultural Readings in Business and Industry."
Sarah Levy, Access Services Librarian and Xi Shi, Librarian, coauthored a book, "Information Literacy for Learners of the Information Age," which was released by Thomson Press.
Faculty Awards/Distinctions:
Dr. Cliff L. Wood, College President, along with actress Ellen Burstyn, will be honored with the Helen Hayes MacArthur Award at the annual Helen Hayes Hospital Gala, a benefit for the physical rehabilitation hospital. The Gala is held annually to honor the achievements of individuals who help and inspire other people to live their lives to their fullest potential. Past recipients include John McLoughlin, Montel Williams, Christopher Reeve, Rosie O’Donnell, Dikembe Mutombo, Lily Tomlin, Arthur Ashe, John Hockenberry, and Edward James Olmos. Peter Arvanites, Professor, Mathematics, was nominated by a student to be included in the 11th edition of the publication, "Who's Who Among American Teachers and Educators" (published in July, delivered in August).
Tenure-Track
Seven new instructors have joined the full-time faculty at SUNY Rockland Community College this fall. This is the first time in three years that the College has appointed new full-time faculty. Most of the following have previously taught as part-time adjunct faculty at the College: Shamika Mitchell, English; Josephine Coleman, Business; Wendy Greenspan, Nursing; Kathleen Hopkins, Nursing; Dale Crispell, Nursing; Dr. Melanie Rie, Biology; Dr. Kristopher Baker, Biology, G. William Baitzel, Coordinator, Automotive Technology.
