Recently Awarded Students, Staff and Faculty
at SUNY Rockland Community College

 

Suffern, NY - The following SUNY Rockland Community College students, faculty and staff have recently been awarded.

 

Rich Syrek, Dean, Center for Personal & Professional Development, received the Rockland Business Association’s 2009 Pinnacle President's Award for Service (Park Ridge, NJ, April 30).

 

Elaine M. Toia, PhD,  Professor, English, has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Award given by the New York State Grand Lodge, Order Sons of Italy in America.  The Grand Lodge initiated this award to recognize outstanding Italian American women in higher education who have made significant contributions to their profession and community.

 

Cliff L. Wood, EdD, College President, received the Rockland Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependence, Inc. (RCADD) Marty Mann Award (April 24, Nyack Seaport).

 

SCENE, the College's quarterly newsletter, received a Judge's Citation from the SUNY CUAD Awards of Excellence. The award went to Zipora Reitman, Director, Campus Communications; Lisa Saunders, Writer, Collette Fournier, Photographer and Ginny Apostolides, Graphics.

 

Kristopher Baker, PhD, Chair, Science, Instructor, Biology, was recognized for his leadership as President of the Board of the Rockland Chapter of Habitat for Humanity at the group's annual Recognition Dinner (Jan. 30). RCC students have raised more than $20,000 to help build a new Habitat house in Hillburn.

 

John Marra, Coordinator of Student Activities and Volunteer Services, received the Adult Volunteer Service Award from the Rockland County Youth Bureau for being the facilitator of E.P.I.C. (Every Person Influences Children) for 14 years.

 

Suzanne Phillips, EdD, Dean of Student Personnel Services, was honored during Women's History Month with the award for Outstanding Civic Service by the 369th Historical Society, whose mission is to preserve the history and legacy of the all black 369th National Veterans' Association.

 

Students

Phi Theta Kappa

Two students who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa honors society were selected for the All New York Academic Team: Chad Agrawal, Second Team, and Robert Chapklin Jr., Third Team. Agrawal, a student in the Sam Draper Mentor Talented Student Honors Program and Student Representative to the Board of Trustees, was also selected as a 2009 Coca Cola National Finalist, for which he will receive $1,000.

 

The College’s Dance Company was selected to perform in the Northeast Regional American College Dance Festival Gala Concert (Penn State University, March 9). RCC was one of eight colleges that were selected to perform out of 30, and the only community college in the concert.
