President Reads at Campus Library's "Kids Story Time"

President of Rockland Community College
First to Read at Campus Library's "Kids Story Time"

Ramapo, NY - The SUNY Rockland Community College library is now hosting a "Kids Story Time" for children enrolled in Campus Fun & Learn, a non-profit child care center open to the general public and located on campus. Dr. Cliff L. Wood, RCC President, was the first to read to the children in the Library Media Center on April 15.

During "Kids Story Time," the children hear books read to them by RCC administrators, faculty, and students in the Library Media Center’s new "Children’s Literature" corner, and participate in follow-up art activities afterwards.

Kyle Miller, Director of Campus Fun & Learn, said, "Many children these days rarely go to a library.  If they do, they are often there for DVDs rather than books. The lack of experience with a library can be due to time --families have little of it to do what isn't absolutely necessary. Parents who are working or going to school aren't around during typical library story times, which are usually during weekday mornings. Demonstrating to children that books are precious and kept in a special place is therefore very important."

Registration has begun for the Summer Session at Campus Fun & Learn Child Development Center located in the Theresa Morahan Simmons Center for Children and Families, next to Academic 1.  The Center is open year-round 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., closing only for major holidays. Open to the general public, it provides care to children from six weeks of age through 12 years.  Children are involved in a variety of experiences throughout their day, including language activities, nature, science, cooking, literacy, art, music and more.

In addition to providing full and part-time care and education to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, the Center offers before and after school and half-day and vacation care to school age children.  Busing to the before and after school program is provided by East Ramapo and Ramapo Central School districts.

RCC students who enroll their children may qualify for scholarships and subsidies for child care tuition, making it very affordable.
