One-Week Food Handling Certification Course Offered
at SUNY Rockland Community College

Suffern, NY - ServSafe, a one-week, 9-hour certification course for food handlers, is offered at SUNY Rockland Community College through the Center for Personal & Professional Development (CPPD).

Session dates/time/cost:

July 13, 14 and 16, 6-9 p.m., Cost: $199

Location: Student Union, Room 3101, Rockland Community College, 145 College Rd., Suffern.

Restaurants, hospitals and corporate food service establishments require employees such as managers, chefs, and servers to have ServSafe Certification. The Rockland County Department of Health will be referring food service employees to RCC to obtain this certification. ServSafe is approved by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). Topics include purchasing, receiving, storage, preparation, cleaning and sanitation, pest management and safety training. A certification exam will be given at the conclusion of the course.

Maribel Quintero of New City, formally a registered nurse, took ServSafe in the Winter of ’08 because she dreamed of owning her own restaurant. Thanks to taking the course, she gained the knowledge necessary to design her own commercial kitchen, without hiring a kitchen designer. “After my first meeting with the Rockland County Board of Health, I learned my plans were perfect! It was a terrific accomplishment, especially since I saved so much money by designing it myself.” Quintero opened The Potter’s Café on Main Street in Nanuet in October of 2008.

The instructor of ServSafe, Scott Goldman, is a Certified ServSafe Instructor and Certified Proctor. In the restaurant industry for 25 years, Goldman has built, run and designed several food service establishments.
