at SUNY Rockland Community College

Suffern, NY - SUNY Rockland Community College students can now earn an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) degree in Emergency Management. Two online courses begin August 24, which is earlier than the RCC Fall ’09 start date of September 1.

EMG 150 Principles of Emergency Management – 2 credits

This course is intended to provide information that will enable persons just entering the profession or expanding their roles to have the ability to work with emergency management issues. It will provide an overview of the characteristics, functions, and resources of an integrated system and of how various emergency management services work together in an integration of resources and capabilities. Emphasis will be placed on how this system is applied to all hazards for all government levels, across the four phases, and all functions of emergency management.

EMG 152 PS Critical Incident Management – 1 credit

This course provides students with information relevant to public safety forces (fire, police, and emergency medical services) roles and responsibilities when responding to an emergency. Additionally, the course provides information dealing with support service agencies and the concerns and roles of private business and local government in supporting public safety forces in emergency situations. It also provides information to encourage cooperation of all groups and agencies at the scene of an emergency, with a key component focusing on the goals and critical tasks of each public safety agency operating at a given scene.

These online Emergency Management courses meet New York State and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements. The Emergency Management degree provides an academic background for professionals in emergency planning, disaster operations, and risk assessment. Graduates will be able to seek jobs with professional fire departments, police departments and emergency service organizations, as well as in private industry as emergency management specialists in the Hudson Valley and in the metropolitan area.

The Emergency Management degree is offered through the Hudson Valley Educational Consortium, an innovative collaboration of four community colleges aimed at bolstering the Hudson Valley's domestic preparedness by broadening the availability of a variety of first-responder degree programs offered by the schools, including emergency management, fire protection technology, paramedic services, and cyber security. The participating colleges are Orange, Ulster, Rockland and Sullivan Community Colleges.
