More than $37,000 Raised For Scholarships at the
25th Silver Rockland Community College Foundation Golf Outing
Suffern, NY - The Rockland Community College Foundation raised more than $37,000 in scholarship funds at their 25th Silver Annual Golf Outing, held on August 19, at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern. There were 170 golfers from businesses across Rockland County who took part in the event.
At the outing, the Foundation selected Dr. Sonya Shapiro, Vice Chair of the SUNY Rockland Community College Board of Trustees, as “Person of the Year” for her service to the Foundation, College and community. Shapiro has been an active member of the Foundation for many years and is the liaison between the Foundation and the Board of Trustees. She will also receive the Community Leadership Award from the Holocaust Museum and Study Center at its gala dinner (September 21).
Prior to her retirement, Shapiro served as Director of Adult Education and Business Services at BOCES. Dr. Shapiro also served as Dean and Full Professor in the Division of Adult and Continuing Education for NYC Technical College, CUNY, as Associate Dean at Pace University and, at SUNY Rockland in the 1970's, as instructor of psychology and career and educational counselor.
Having been initially appointed to the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees by the Rockland County Legislature in 2001 for a five-year term, Dr. Shapiro was reappointed by the County Legislature to serve a second five-year term which will end June 30, 2011.
"The annual golf outing is a signature event of the Foundation. Not only do participants enjoy a great day of golf, they truly help an important community institution and the students who rely on it," said Don Cairns, Executive Director of the Foundation.
Since its inception in 1982, the Foundation has awarded almost $2 million in scholarships to students for scholastic excellence and/or financial need. Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships. The Foundation also assists and enhances the academic programs of the College.
