Brain-Based Learning: A Theory Under Investigation in Higher Education

Dr. Nahed Salama, Professor of Science at SUNY Rockland, with research experience at Montefiore and Albert Einstein Medical Centers, will speak on how the increasing use of imaging technology to map the brain’s various regions and functions has clarified the natural relationship between brain structure and learning. The emphasis, from the biological point of view, will be on how brain connections change data into knowledge, and on methods used by educators to help the learners change these connections.

Dr. Nahed Salama has a Ph.D. in biology from City University of New York (CUNY), as well as two master’s degrees, in micro-biology and science education.

Her experience includes work in the areas of heart, bone marrow, and kidney transplant immunology; cancer, blood and lupus research. For more than 12 years she has been an active member of the American Society of Microbiology, participating as a group leader in shaping the microbiology core curriculum for allied health and non-major micro-biology students nationwide. She is also an active member of the Empire State Association of Two Year College Biologists and served as its president for two terms.
