Jerre Vanderhoef, mother of C. Scott Vanderhoef, Rockland County Executive, was born in 1921 in Southern California where she was raised. She studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles and embarked upon a career in advertising illustration and portrait sketching. In the early 1950s, Vanderhoef’s imagination was captured by the Hudson Valley landscape. She stated, “Rockland County is filled with beauty and history to paint, and I like to think that I am preserving some of this vanishing countryside through my paintings.”
Although she retained her status as a portrait artist, her first love was the Hudson Valley countryside, punctuated by historical landmarks. Vanderhoef taught landscape and still-life painting at the Rockland Center for the Arts for many years. Her work is represented in private collections throughout the country. She passed away in 2008.
Jerre Vanderhoef’s granddaughter, Erin Vanderhoef, B.F.A., is a co-curator of the exhibit. Erin stated, “As I have grown, it has been fascinating to see my grandma’s paintings being admired in public places. I am so proud of her accomplishments as a Rockland County artist."
The other co-curator, Colleen Vanderhoef, M.A., is Jerre’s daughter-in-law.
Colleen, an RCC graduate, stated, “Jerre Vanderhoef was an expert watercolorist. She had been commissioned by many collectors, volunteered at numerous community functions to create portraits, taught privately in her studio, and was focused on capturing a moment in time in the community of Rockland within her paintings.”
