SUNY Rockland First New York Community College to Receive Information Assurance Course Validation From Committee on National Security Systems

Suffern, NY - SUNY Rockland is the first community college in the state to receive the stamp of approval for its Information Assurance courses from the Committee on National Security Systems.

The Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Program, which provides consistency education for information assurance skills that are critical to our nation, has validated SUNY Rockland's Computer Networking courses.

Rockland Community College developed an Associate's degree in Local Area Network Administration in 1996 with a focus on preparing students for industry certification.  Since then, the program evolved into the current Computer Networking program, which includes courses in Security, Linux, Wireless Networking and Network Infrastructure.  In recent years, the program's focus has shifted to Information Assurance.  Programs in IT Auditing and Information Security Management are currently under development.

The following courses offered by the College were certified as mapping to 100% of the elements of the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) National Training Standard for: Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals, NSTISSI No. 4011:

  • CNE 106 Networking I/CCNA
  • CNE 112 PC Application Support
  • CNE 130 Intro to Network Security (CompTIA Security+®)
  • CNE 220 Intro to Wireless Networks (CWNA®)
  • ELT 249 PC Maintenance (CompTIA  A+®)

Students who successfully complete this course sequence can be assured that the curriculum they have studied has been recognized by the Committee on National Security Systems as meeting this national training standard. Information Assurance is a field that is involved with operations that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation. These skills are applicable to both national security and day-to-day business operations.

The College will receive recognition and an official certificate during the June 2008 CNSS Awards Ceremony, which will be held at the 12th Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) on June 4, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.  This certificate, signed by the CNSS Chair, will be valid through June 2013. Bill Baker, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Jeanette Geller, Associate Professor of Computer Networking and Coordinator Computer Studies, Networking and Electronic and Computer Technology, will accept the award on behalf of the College.
