Father of Young Jewish Woman Killed by Suicide Bomber Will Discuss Organ Donation
at SUNY Rockland Community College

Suffern, NY - Stephen Flatow, father of suicide bombing victim Alisa Flatow, will discuss his controversial decision to donate his daughter's organs at SUNY Rockland Community College.

Alisa Flatow had attended an Orthodox Jewish girls' high school in Suffern. While on leave from Brandeis University her junior year to study in Israel, she was killed in a 1995 suicide bombing in the Gaza Strip. She was 20-years old. While she lay brain dead in an Israeli hospital, Stephen and his wife Roz chose to remove her from life support and donate her organs.

Stephen Flatow, co-founder of the Halachic Organ Donor Society, which examines organ donation in the light of Jewish law, will speak to students in the Jewish Life Studies course, "Contemporary Jewish Issues," about his work in educating religious Jews about the permissibility of organ donation.

Flatow, a West Orange, N.J., attorney, sued Iran for  $247.5 million under a 1996 law that authorized lawsuits for damages suffered in acts of terror by countries designated by the United States as sponsors of terrorism.

Taught by Rabbi Dov Oliver, Director of the Center for Jewish Life/Hillel, the three-credit course examines a variety of philosophical, ethical, social, and political issues, including medical-ethical dilemmas, anti-Semitism, lifecycle events, Jewish identity, relationships and marriage, and more.
