"Conquering Math Anxiety"

Technology Center, Ellipse (Room 8180)

Lecture by Peter Arvanites, Professor of Mathematics

Many students at the elementary school, middle school, high school, and college level experience math anxiety.  The feelings associated with this type of anxiety prevent them from effectively learning math by interfering with their concentration and retention.  This presentation will address the formal definition, history, causes, and assessment of math anxiety.  Further, strategies to prevent and treat the anxiety, including the recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, will be discussed.

Professor Peter Arvanites is a member of the Mathematics Department at SUNY Rockland. In 1997, Arvanites received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has been named to Who's Who Among American Teachers and Educators, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the East. Presently, Arvanites is a member of the Mathematical Association of America and the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges.
