Computer Networking Program Changed to Cyber Security Program
Computer Networking Program Changed to Cyber Security Program
at SUNY Rockland Community College
Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) now available in Cyber Security
Suffern, NY - Beginning Fall 2010, SUNY Rockland Community College will offer an associate’s degree in Cyber Security, a program that is certified by the Committee on National Security Systems and the National Security Agency.
SUNY Rockland continues to be the only community college in the state to receive the stamp of approval for its Cyber Security courses from the Committee on National Security Systems.
According to the Advanced Technological Education Center, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, the College is one of only 30 community colleges in the U.S., and the only State University of New York (SUNY) community college, to have successfully mapped its courseware to the 4011 National Training Standards. The College is now in the process of mapping the 4013 National Security Training Standards, which will enable RCC to be designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. The courses being mapped are part of the Cyber Security degree program.
The Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Program, which provides consistency education for information assurance skills that are critical to our nation, has validated SUNY Rockland's Computer Networking courses.
Rockland Community College developed an Associate's degree in Local Area Network Administration in 1996 with a focus on preparing students for industry certification. Since then, the program evolved into the current Computer Networking program, which includes courses in Security, Linux, Wireless Networking and Network Infrastructure. In recent years, the program's focus has shifted to Information Assurance. Programs in IT Auditing, Information Security Management and Computer Forensics are currently under development or available for registration.
Cyber Security is a field that is involved with operations that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation. These skills are applicable to both national security and day-to-day business operations.
