Academy for Gifted and Talented Children To Open This Fall at SUNY Rockland

Suffern, NY - A new program designed to challenge the educational needs of academically gifted and talented children will begin this fall on Saturdays through the Center for Personal & Professional Development at SUNY Rockland Community College.

Anyone who is interested in the program is invited to the Information Session held on Monday, September 10, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., in the Student Union, Upper Level, Room 3214, on the main campus in Suffern.

Classes are scheduled to run on Saturdays, October 6 - November 3, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Academy for Gifted and Talented Kids incorporates a curriculum and teaching strategies that will stretch the minds of children who have special abilities. Classes are taught by experienced, state-certified teachers and college-level faculty.

The curriculum will include programs that involve critical thinking and problem solving skills such as code-cracking and strategy games.

"Programs for the gifted can change a child’s life. Our Academy will offer a cohesive and creative program that allows students to share their insights and talents constructively outside their usual classrooms. We are very excited to meet this special need within our community," said Alice Chin, Dean of Center for Personal & Professional Development.

To be eligible for the academy, children must either already be in a gifted program at their school or have eligible standardized test scores. Eligible children can be a resident of any county.

For more information or to reserve a seat at the information sessions, please call the Center for Personal & Professional Development at (845) 574-4730, or visit www.sunyrockland.edu/go/cppd.
