Academy for Gifted and Talented Children Program Is Now Accepting Applications For Spring Semester

Parents Invited to Information Sessions

Suffern, NY - The new program at SUNY Rockland Community College, designed to challenge the educational needs of academically gifted children, is holding informational sessions for parents considering enrolling their children in the spring semester.

Anyone interested in learning about the Academy for Gifted and Talented Children is invited to the Information Sessions held on Tuesdays, Jan. 15 and Feb. 12, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 3214, on the main campus in Suffern. The program runs Saturdays, March 29 - May 10 (no class on April 19), from 9 a.m. until noon, depending upon the number of classes a child takes.

The Academy for Gifted and Talented Children, which operates through the Center for Personal & Professional Development, admitted close to 30 children in the Fall semester. Speaking of the fall semester, Corrine Winchell of Stony Point said “My kids couldn’t wait to get to go to school on Saturdays at 9 o’clock in the morning!” Her twin fourth graders, Carly and Dylan, took Code-Crackers, Get Art Smart and Science Fun. The children plan to return for the spring semester and take Mysteries of the World, Problem Solving and Strategy Games.

The Academy for Gifted and Talented Kids incorporates a curriculum and teaching strategies that stretches the minds of children who have special abilities. Classes are taught by experienced, state-certified teachers and college-level faculty.

To be eligible for the academy, children must either already be in a gifted program at their school or have eligible standardized test scores. Eligible children can be a resident of any county.

For more information, or to reserve a seat at the information sessions, please call the Center for Personal & Professional Development at (845) 574-4730, or visit www.sunyrockland.edu/go/cppd.
