Academy for Gifted and Talented Children Program Finishing First Semester

Enrollment Now Open for Spring

Suffern, NY - The new program designed to challenge the educational needs of academically gifted children ends its first semester with special concluding class programs, including code-cracking and Mysteries of the World research presentations, at SUNY Rockland Community College.

Classes are held in the Technology Center, Rooms 8371, 8373, 8375, on the main campus in Suffern. The last class this semester will be held on Saturday, November 10.

Anyone interested in learning about the spring program is invited to the Information Sessions held on Tuesdays, Jan. 15 and Feb. 12, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union, Room 3214, on the main campus in Suffern. Classes are scheduled to run Saturdays, March 29 - May 10 (no class on April 19), from 9 a.m. until noon, depending upon the number of classes a child takes. A new curriculum is being offered in the spring.

The Academy for Gifted and Talented Children, which operates through the Center for Personal & Professional Development, admitted close to 30 children in the Fall semester. “My kids can’t wait to get to go to school on Saturdays at 9 o’clock in the morning!” said Corrine Winchell of Stony Point. Her twin fourth graders, Carly and Dylan, are taking Code-Crackers, Get Art Smart and Science Fun. Winchell says that on the last day of Code-Crackers, November 10, the kids will finally figure out the solution to the “Who Done It” problem given in the first class, using codes like the Morse code. “They already said, ‘we want to do it again!’” said Winchell. The children plan to return in for the spring semester and take Mysteries of the World, Problem Solving and Strategy Games.

The Academy for Gifted and Talented Kids incorporates a curriculum and teaching strategies that stretches the minds of children who have special abilities. Classes are taught by experienced, state-certified teachers and college-level faculty.

To be eligible for the academy, children must either already be in a gifted program at their school or have eligible standardized test scores. Eligible children can be a resident of any county.
