Rockland Community College Holds 50th Commencement
First Time Honorary Degrees Awarded
Ramapo, NY - SUNY Rockland Community College held its 50th commencement on May 23, celebrating the graduation of approximately 1,000 students who completed their requirements in August '09, December '09 or May '10.
In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, the College awarded honorary degrees for the first time to two community members who have greatly enhanced the lives of the students-- New York State Senator Thomas Patrick Morahan and Herbert Kurz, Chairman of Presidential Life Insurance Company. Other firsts at the ceremony included the graduation of 17 young women from socio-economically disadvantaged communities in Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, who spent two years at RCC preparing for business careers in their own countries. The students were members of the Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS) program, which brings outstanding students from underserved communities to the U.S. for two years of study, leadership training, community service and cultural exchange.
Six graduates received the President's Award, which is earned by students with a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) who have completed a minimum of 30 credits at RCC. The recipients are:
Honey Katzman, Monsey
Jill Anish, New City
Abigail Hunte, New City
