$174,000 in Scholarships Awarded at Scholarship Awards Ceremony

$174,000 in Scholarships Awarded at SUNY Rockland Community College’s Scholarship Awards Ceremony

 

There was a 30% increase in applications this year

 

Suffern, NY - One hundred and thirty outstanding continuing and graduating students received $174,000 in scholarships from the Rockland Community College Foundation. The awards were given at the Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 20.

 

There was a 30% increase in applications this year. Despite a difficult economic year, the Foundation will offer another $86,000 in scholarships to the newly-entering high school students who have until July 13 to apply.

 

Ashley Kardian from Stony Point received the largest award, the Jane Cohen Memorial Scholarship, a two-year full tuition scholarship to Pace University (valued at $60,000). She graduated North Rockland High School and began RCC in Fall 2007 as the recipient of the Jack Watson Honors Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship valued at almost $7,000. Other scholarships awarded included full tuition to SUNY Rockland ($3,200 value) to smaller awards of several hundred dollars.

 

Newly created scholarships include the $1,500 Independent Insurance Agents of Rockland County Scholarship, which was awarded to Sheela George of Pearl River. It was funded by the Independent Insurance Agents of Rockland County to promote social responsibility and awareness of drinking and driving.

 

Students were recognized for excellence in academics, program of study, athletics, and service to community. Recipients included minorities, art students, nursing students, athletes, students with disabilities, children of alumni and honor students.
