Intended Audience: Community groups, high school students, college students, etc. (audiences have ranged from Rikers Island inmates to West Point Cadets).
Abstract: This workshop will be tailored to the needs and interests of the group. Participants learn how to conduct a debate, the basics of debate strategy and/or how to critically evaluate debates. College students may learn the basics of a college debate format called Public Forum Debate (not the high school Public Forum Debate). Groups may request multi-session workshops.
About the Speaker: Andrew T. Jacobs, Professor of Speech, is Director of Forensics at RCC (that is, the coach of the Speech and Debate Team). A nationally ranked debater, he has more than 20 years of experience as a competitor and coach. Jacobs earned his BA in Philosophy from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; and his MA in Speech Communication from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY.
